Recording phone calls

Get your phone calls into Caven with your own number, per provider

3 min read

Caven can record, transcribe and summarise your phone calls, just like your meetings, while the person you call sees your own number. There are several ways to do this. Which one works best depends on your phone provider.

Choose your provider

Provider not listed? Calling via the Caven number and calling over the internet always work, with any provider.

Call via the Caven number

This works with any provider, on iPhone and Android, and is the default in the Caven app.

  1. Tap a contact or number in the Calls tab of the Caven app.
  2. Your regular phone app places the call, with your own SIM card. On iPhone you confirm once with Call. Your phone calls a Belgian (or Dutch) Caven number, which is part of your normal calling plan.
  3. Caven recognises you by your number and connects you straight through to the person you wanted to call. They see your own number, not Caven’s.
  4. The call is recorded. Afterwards the recording, transcript and summary are in Caven, just like a meeting.

If the other person doesn’t answer or is busy, you see that in your phone’s call screen as usual, and you pay nothing.

Asked for a code?

If your phone hides your number ("Show My Caller ID" off), Caven cannot recognise you. You then hear a short tone: enter the four-digit code the Caven app shows. Turn caller ID on to avoid this.

On Android: automatically

On Android it can be even simpler. In the Caven app, turn on Settings → Calls → Call via Caven automatically. From then on, when you call from your phone app or contacts, Android routes the call through Caven and it is recorded. Emergency and short numbers never go through Caven.

This isn’t possible on iPhone: iOS doesn’t let apps redirect calls from the Phone app. Start your call from Caven there.

Once: verify your number

Before your first call, Caven asks you to verify your mobile number (Calls → Verify your number). That way Caven knows the number is yours and may show it to the person you call.

Call over the internet

The Caven app can also place the call itself, over Wi-Fi or mobile data, without using your calling plan. If your connection weakens or drops, Caven reconnects or calls your mobile to continue the conversation. Choose the method under Settings → Calls, or press and hold the call button to choose per call.

Recording at your provider

Some business providers and phone systems (such as Dstny, Teams Phone, Aircall, Ringover or 3CX) record calls themselves. You call as always, incoming calls included, and Caven fetches the recordings through your provider’s API. Choose your provider above to see what to enable, and contact us to set up the connection.

Other ways

  • Through your computer: take your phone calls on your Mac ("Calls from iPhone") or Windows PC (Phone Link). The Caven desktop app records the audio.
  • Upload a recording: if your device records calls itself (e.g. Samsung), or you use an external recorder, upload the file in Caven. iPhones can’t record calls in the EU.

Good to know

  • Tell the other person you are recording. In Belgium and the Netherlands you may record a call you take part in, but you must inform the other person if you use the recording for business.
  • Save the Caven number to your contacts (Settings → Calls), so your phone recognises Caven when it calls you back to continue a call.
  • Cost for you: calling via the Caven number is a regular call to a Belgian (or Dutch) number, within your plan.
